What could ‘Justified Accord’ yield ?

ADDIS ABABA – Hosting for the first time, Justified Accord 19 (JA) will bring about good opportunity for Ethiopia to equip its National Defense Force with advanced military skills and learn best practices in fighting terrorism and others, according to experts.

In exclusive interview with The Ethiopian Herald, IGAD Security Sector Program (IGAD SSP) Director, Commander Abebe Muluneh said the joint military exercise could bring experiences and best practices to Ethiopia.

According to him, in this dynamic world learning is fundamental to hone the skills and tactics of the military. Ethiopia did not lack military science or bravery but this era needs more training and skill.

JA has key role in bringing together East African nations, the United States, partners, and international organizations to strengthen relationships and increase military and inter-governmental capacity. He also said that it has an important role to enhance peacekeeping capabilities.

Commander Abebe added that hosting the 19 JA in Ethiopia will create a good opportunity for those military and government personnel coming from Brazil, Burundi, Canada, Djibouti, France, Germany, Italy, Kenya, Netherlands, Rwanda, Somalia, Uganda, and the UK and other international organizations to have first-hand information about Ethiopia.

According to a press release released by the United States of America Embassy, hosting the 19 JA could bring economic return infusing nearly six million USD directly to the Ethiopian economy.

The military exercise could also increase interoperability and help participating military forces to enhance readiness and, the skill required to support peacekeeping operations and promote regional security.

At the ceremony which was held at Peace and Support Training Center, U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Ambassador Michael Raynor also said that Ethiopia plays an essential role in regional security. It is the world’s largest contributor to global peacekeeping forces, and an essential partner in security cooperation efforts in the Horn of Africa, and beyond.

“Ethiopia’s commitment in promoting peace is a testament to its dedication to the principle that professional, responsible, and constructive peacekeeping and military activities can lead to a more stable, prosperous, and politically inclusive region. This makes Ethiopia a very fitting host for an exercise like Justified Accord.”
