Recall that President Sahlework Zewde gave a speech on the government’s annual priorities at the joint session of the House of People’s Representatives and House of Federation.
In her speech, she stated that Ethiopia’s joining BRICS was the biggest diplomatic victory.
The principle of Ethiopia’s foreign relations policy, which aspires to scale-up friendship, multiply partners and embrace development partners, will continue to be strengthened, the president pointed out.
In an exclusive interview with ENA, Institute of Foreign Affairs Strategic Affairs Deputy Director-General Jafar Bedru said Ethiopia’s joining BRICS has immense significance.
He stated that the multilateral diplomatic cooperation will not only boost Ethiopia’s leverage but also create conducive situation to echo the voice of Africa.
Jafar added that multilateral diplomatic relations not only increase Ethiopia’s influence, but also create a favorable environment for Africa’s voice to resonate in the world.
“Being part of this group will transform Ethiopia’s capacity and position on international platforms. It will also make the world take the country seriously,” the deputy director-general said.
Also, Ethiopia’s joining multilateral institutions has a significant role in expanding its development and economic cooperation opportunities.
According to Jafar, Ethiopia is focusing on increasing its participation in international institutions. Ethiopia does not of course side with anyone. Ethiopia sides with its national interest.
In her speech, President Sahlework also elaborated that Ethiopia’s adherence to the principle of multilateral diplomacy explains its standing with fairness.
This should be a platform where we can discuss things that are in the interest of mankind and all countries based on reason, truth and knowledge, the deputy-director general said, stressing that the platform should not be a place for geopolitical competition.
