Ministry conducting mining impact study

ADDIS ABABA- Ministry of Mines, Petroleum, and Natural Gas said it has been conducting study so that the banned mining companies commence production once again.

Hailu Tekleab, Environment and Climate Change Directorate Director at the Ministry told The Ethiopian Herald that the study is expected to come up with a solution that guarantees the society’s health and environment safety.

It is to be recalled that the government has banned some mining companies as local communities were complaining that their activities were causing environmental pollution and health damages.

The study is expected to come up with environmental and societal impact assessment at a local and national level.

The study is also expected to come with solutions for the problems, Hailu said. “The study is conducted by taking the interests of the local communities, companies and the country as a whole into consideration.”

The results of the study will be made public in the near future, The Ethiopian Herald learnt.
