Partners implementing Better Migration Management Project

ADDIS ABABA– Development partners have been implementing a 3-year Better Migration Management Project with a total of 46 million euro to fight insecure migration.

The project, which has been implemented mainly in Ethiopia by the British Council, is funded by the EU (40 million Euros) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (6 million Euros).

It aims to improve migration management in the region, and in particular to address the trafficking and smuggling of migrants within and from the Horn of Africa.

The priority is to strengthen the rights of migrants and protect them better from violence, abuse, and exploitation.

Sosna Lema Civil Society Consultant at British Council and Project Coordinator at Better Migration Management told The Ethiopian Herald the project is being implemented in cooperation with five member states, such as France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom and a number of prominent institutions, including the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Expertise France, the Italian Ministry of the Interior and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

She also noted that to prevent and protect the insecure migration, the British Council is working with concerned through awareness creation.

British Council is working to raise awareness on the issue with 10 partners and three service providers. The project is set to reach out to more than 10,000 individuals and will be implemented in the hot spot areas such as Gonder, Addis Ababa, Jigjiga, and Metema through media and public stages.

Sosna expressed that the project will be completed in September 2019 and the second project will begin on October 2020.
