Churning up competent youths that cope up with the era of industrialization

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has been undertaking successive measures regarding nurturing competitive human power that feed the country’s ever-growing industrialization thrust. Currently, numerous youths are attending education throughout the country.

During this era of technology, industrialization and globalization, they are expected to be competent enough by being more productive in the industry and technology sectors.

As part of this, MoE has been doing a research on “Education and training challenges and solutions” to identify main sector bottlenecks. Based on this research inputs, the Ministry is expected to announce its 15 years education roadmap soon.

According to the research, more than 15,000 samples are selected to be entailed in the research .Helpful inputs are expected towards the realization of a road-map, expected to guide the country’s 15 years education policy and strategies, focus areas, evaluation standards, sector quality and contributions, among others.

“The current education curriculum seems generating more job-seekers rather than entrepreneurial youths. Knowledge gaps, moral decadence, shortage of technologies, competent teachers and sector leaders, among others, are among the major sector’s challenges”, the research revealed.

“Introducing latest-technological applications in the education sector showcases a conspicuous move towards realizing the country’s renaissance. To this end, the education philosophy of the country ought to build and promote capable youths, job creators and innovators, industrious and patriotic as well as enabling professionally and internationally competitive generation”, the research recommended.

Addis Ababa Institute of Technology (AAiT) School of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Ass. Prof. and Addis Ababa University (AAU) Student Career Center Development Director Kassu Bulcha told The Ethiopian Herald that industries should be open to universities to cultivate a conducive university-industry linkage (consortium) that promotes professional excellence.

The center had organized a job fair to interconnect graduates with the industry. Utilizing the situation, private investors managed to register students to employ them in the near future, he said.

As to him, having industrial ethical knowhow, carefulness and exercising professionalism are the major factors that boost graduates’ chance of being employed at the industries.

“The center is providing various mentorship programs to the graduates to rise up to the requirements of industries they join after graduation”, he noted.

Regarding upgrading quality and problem-solving researches, the university works in collaboration with industries, he underscored.

Recently, minister of Urban Development and Construction Ayisha Mohamed said that youths after graduation from universities and Technical and Vocational Education Training Institutes (TVET) are becoming job seekers rather than creating jobs by themselves.

The Ministry has been employing competitive youths previously but now it is facing several challenges regarding the sector, she added.

According to her, the Ministry has been providing various opportunities to the youth.

Federal Urban Job Creation and Food Security Agency Director General Zenebe Kumo for his part said that his office through creating job opportunities is undertaking various measures regarding enabling youths become competitive in the industry sector.

As to him, facilitating better platform, curbing good governance problems and rent -seeking behaviors in the sector are important to widen the youths’ opportunities to get employed.
