“Political parties’ peace building role can’t be overlooked”: Politicians

 BY HAILE DEMEKE

ADDIS ABABA – Leaders of competing political parties emphasized the role of political actors to furthering Ethiopia’s comparative peace which it has enjoyed following the Pretoria Agreement.

Accordingly, Enat Party Executive Member and Public Relation Head Dawit Birhanu told the Ethiopian Press Agency (EPA) that a lot is expected from political parties and other actors in the society to maintain the peace and stability that has been achieved.

Peaceful dialogue is among the most important thing to find solutions to problems and competing political parties needs to develop culture of dialogue which is fundamental step towards peace and nation building.

On the other hand, in order to bring sustainable peace in the country, the ruling party needs to work hand in hand and discuss with the competing parties. The collaboration between the two actors is crucial in averting external challenges and domestic problems, he emphasized.

“Experts also have the responsibility to discharge their role in supporting the government and put way forward for challenges that the country has been facing.”

Afar People’s Party Chairman Mussa Adem for his part indicated that political tranquility is fundamental to enduring peace and leaders of political parties should stand at the forefront in bringing the country to stability.

Leaders of political parties need to safeguard Ethiopia’s national interest and territorial integrity while communicating their supporters. The public, on other hand, needs to carefully investigate information and not to be hijacked by media lies.

Mussa advised social media actors to refrain from inciting conflict and shift their energy to sustain peace and nation building.
