ADDIS ABABA– The Ministry of Education announced that preparations have been finalized to resume education in four universities in Tigray State starting from the upcoming September.
Ministry Administration and Development Director General Solomon Abreha (PhD) told the Ethiopian Press Agency (EPA) that preparations have been finalized to open four universities that were closed due to the northern conflict in Tigray State. Efforts are exerted to make universities ready to resume the regular teaching-learning process next year.
In order to put these universities into operation, repeated discussions were held with university leaders to assess the status in Mekelle. The universities are performing practical activities to help themselves resume teaching-learning.
Solomon stated that various activities are underway to fulfill facilities such as provision of food, medical services and others before starting the teaching and learning process. By fulfilling these facilities, Raya University started registering students. Mekelle and Adigrat universities are expected to complete the remaining tasks in the coming months to start accepting students and teaching-learning.
“However, Aksum University may be delayed due to some damages. While the universities did not return to their previous position when admitting students, they would first complete the basic facilities. Other things would be fulfilled through process. It is expected that the universities will complete the basic elements to start work in September,” he added.
Universities were offering education for 45, 000 students before the conflict. Out of these, 22,000 students have been temporarily assigned to another university to pursue their studies. The universities will admit some 20,000 students who have not been assigned to other universities, it was learnt.
