Army members say egregious act never frustrates defense forces

ADDIS ABABA – Members of Ethiopian Defense Forces said the recent assassination of senior military officials would rather strengthen the army than causing frustration as it was intended.

Commenting on the recent killing of Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces General Seare Mekonnen and retired Major General Gezae Abera the members noted that the army is united as ever and the death of the generals would never frustrate it from discharging its responsibility, as they told the state daily, Addis Zemen.

Human Resource Team Leader with Military University, Lt. Col. Leteberhan Desta stated that Gen. Seare Mekonnen was a highly devoted leader who played a great role in keeping unity of the people and peace of the country.

“The death of our leaders would strengthen our unity more than ever and maintain our commitment as usual,” she said. On his part, Maj. Feleke Mengiste said General Se’are Mekonnen had a great role in the ongoing reform. “But since all members of the army share great responsibility his death would not affect the army’s goal.”

“We will maintain the ongoing national reform, play our part to unite the nations, nationalities and peoples of the country and also work for the equality of our citizens,” he added.

Lt. Col. Gebremedhin Gebremeskel stated that defense forces do not work for a particular community or group. “We are the assurance for the safety of all Ethiopian nations, nationalities and peoples.”

He said Ethiopia is currently undergoing a reform process during which various challenges are likely to happen. During such moments, the defense forces are expected to play a great role in ensuring peace and security of the country and its peoples. He reaffirmed that the defense forces are ready to discharge their responsibility as required.
