AAU awards honorary doctorate to Gadaa scholar

Addis Ababa University (AAU) awarded an honorary doctorate degree to Prof. Asmerom Legesse yesterday for his remarkable accomplishments and contributions in advancing Gadaa studies.

Addis Ababa University President Prof. Tassew Woldehanna said that Prof.Asmerom Leggesse is a renowned and distinguished scholar of social sciences with acclaimed numerous published works, carried out with exemplary objectivity and meticulous research.

“His works have enormously contributed to our knowledge of the Gadaa System as an indigenous socioeconomic and political institution. We are greatly honored to receive him as Addis Ababa University’s special guest who has conducted many years of field research among the Borana Oromo of Ethiopia and Kenya for more than half a century studying one of the African Indigenous Socioeconomic and Political System, the Gadaa as a unique Democratic system,” Prof. Tassew added.

Oromia State Chief Lemma Megersa said that Prof. Asmerom has done a great deal in promoting the Gadaa System in the world’s literature. “The Oromo people honor his lasting contributions for advancing world’s understanding of the institution of the Gadaa system.”

Receiving the honorary doctorate, Oromo Gadaa’s expert said, “I am honored and delighted to receive the honor. It is also a great privilege to come back to AAU after more than half a century when Ethiopia is undertaking a reform that would benefit the entire Horn of Africa.”

Eritrean Professor AsmeromLegesse is an anthropologist who has been recognized as an exceptionally leading scholarwith a long record of highly original and influential research on the Gadaa System.
