Fiker, Eshete win over all Abebe Bikila Marathon
ADDISS ABABA – The 35th edition of the Abebe Bikila Marathon took place on Sunday in Bahir Dar City. This is the first time to take place in Bahir Dar in 37 years.
Fikr Bekele of Federal Police came out first leaving behind Mequanint Ayenew of Commercial Bank of Ethiopia and Birye Teshome of Federal Police to take the second and third places, in the order of that.
In the women’s event Eshete Bekereof Oromia Police took title while Zeyituna Arebo of Prison Police finished second. The third place was won by Meseret Dinke. Meseret is the private runner.
President of the Ethiopian Athletics Federation Derartu Tulu gave away trophies and money prize to the winners. Runners who got up to tenth places were awarded money prize. The federation has awarded close to 300, 000 birr.
This competition has been interrupted only twice in the last 37 years. The race that began and ended at Ghion Hotel was organized in cooperation with Amhara Athletics Federation.
Hadiya Hosana, Wolkite City and Sebeta City promote to elite league
ADDIS ABABA – Hadiya Hosana, Wokite City and Sebeta City will join the next season Ethiopian Premier League sides, the Ethiopian Football Federation announced.
This indicates that the two Addis sides, Electric and Insurance are failed to join the elite league.
Electric complained that carrying out Higher League matches in different regional venues has become literally impossible.
The Addis sides in the EPL have now diminished only to three: Saint George, Coffee and Mekelakeya. Addis had five to six representatives in the EPL before the relegation of Electric two years ago.
Avoid doping, play clean, says Professor Ahmed
ADDIS ABABA – Avoid taking drugs to win in a sport and be clean to enjoy an everlasting success in competitive sports and health. This was the advice given during the opening day of the Zone five African countries Anti-Doping regular meeting held at the Radison Blu Hotel on June 12.
Professor Ahmed, President of the Zone Five African Anti-Doping office said that taking banned drugs has now become common in most parts of the country.
The Ethiopian Anti-Doping Office (ETH-NADO) Director General Mekonen Yidersal said on the occasion that the Ethiopian office made high achievement in controlling drugs in the country in the last two years. The national anti-doping body was established in 2017.
The Board Chairman of ETH-NADO, Dr. Aklilu Azajh also said that this national institution works hard to protect Ethiopian athletes from taking banned drugs.
It was also cited that Ethiopia got recognition by the World Anti-Doping Agency, Commonly called WADA due to the work done up to now.
