ADDIS ABABA– The Addis Ababa city administration announced that the construction of 100,000 houses will be carried out in the first round of government-private partnership. On Thursday, 68 local and foreign developers entered into a contract agreement with the Addis Ababa city administration to build 30/70 association houses to be built by the government and private partnership.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abebe said at the signing ceremony that the government will build 30/70 association houses in two years through a public-private partnership to help alleviate the housing shortage. In the next two years, the construction of 100,000 houses will be completed and will be made accessible to middle-income citizens of the city at low cost.
Some 350 hectares of land has been prepared in different sub-cities for the construction of the houses. According to the agreement, the developers announced that they will take over the site within two weeks in the first round. The mayor pointed out that the city administration has designed and implemented various housing development options to match the housing demand and supply. Accordingly, residents are being organized and built in an association.
To meet the demand for housing, the city administration is creating comfortable living areas for the residents by constructing condominiums, home renovations, and using technologies to build prefabricated houses in a short period of time. The administration has also made a lot of efforts to meet the high demand for housing in the city. “Since it is not possible to meet the housing demand by the government alone, efforts are being made to increase the housing supply by creating favorable conditions for the private sector to participate in the construction of houses.”
Adanech further assured her administration’s unreserved support for the house developers. It was learned that the city administration will provide free land for the housing development and will also provide infrastructure. Each of the developers signed in the first round has proposed to develop an average of more than 1,000 houses, and it has been stated that they will complete the construction within two years.
The mayor urged the developers to start work quickly so that the houses can be built in good quality and on time so that they can be handed over to the residents. It has been shown that 68 of the 150 developers who submitted proposals for the 30/70 association houses to be built by the government and private sector have been selected. The house developers, on their part, appreciated the efforts started to build houses together with the city administration and expressed commitment to carry out the construction quickly and responsibly.
