Welkait high voltage transmission line, substation project well underway

‘ADDIS ABABA – Welkayt Sugar Factory High voltage transmission line and substation project, situated in north western part of Ethiopia is to be inaugurated. The project will also go operational as soon as the commissioning work is completed.

According to documents obtained from Ethiopian Electric Power, the 230kv transmission line project is well underway and its current performance has reached 98 per cent. Activities of erecting 75 towers and installing a 33km transmission lines have recently been completed.

Documents from Ethiopian Electric Power further indicate that excavations of foundation, construction of staff residence, and erection of control room have been carried out over the past five years.

In addition, installation of circuit breaker, bus bar, cabling and panel board and erection of 60 MVA power transformers have also been finalized. Civil and electro mechanical works are reported to be in the finalization phase.

Up on completion, the project will have three outgoing lines which are vital to electrify the sugar factory which is under construction, satisfy power demand of industries in the area, and improve power supply to the people living in the vicinity.

The Ethiopia Electric Power Transmission, Substation Construction Department is mandated to run the project while the Iran based Sunir Company has been delivering the electro mechanical equipments.

The 342 million birr project is totally financed by the government of Ethiopia.
