Mufti Omar becomes Islamic Affairs Supreme Council President

ADDIS ABABA- The outgoing President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council (EIASC), Haji Muhammad- Amin Jamal handed over his responsibility to Mufti Haji Omar Idris yesterday.

The event marked the first peaceful transition of power in Ethiopian Islamic leadership since the establishment of the Supreme Council some 40 years back. According to the EIASC, members of the newly-formed Transitional Ulema Council and Board as well as Ethiopian Muslims Arbitration Committee were in the attendance during the handing over ceremony.

It was recalled Mufti Haji Omar elected to lead the Transitional Ulema Council and Board on May 1, 2019 in the presence of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) and other highranking government officials as well as Muslim scholars.

Premier Abiy widely credited for his meticulous approach in encouraging dialogue among Muslim scholars in the view to solve differences in Islamic leadership in a peaceful manner. The incoming President of EIASC, Mufti Omar is also the President of the Ethiopian Ulema, Fatwa and Da’awa Council, the chief governing body of Islamic teaching in the country.
