Senegal Embassy marks 59th National day

ADDIS ABABA- Senegal Embassy marked the 59th anniversary of Senegal independence here in Addis Ababa last Friday.

Senegalese Ambassador to Ethiopia, Baye Moctar Diop, told The Ethiopian Herald that the National Day is a reminder for Senegalese people a new day for better future.

He said the day is the starting point for the current political and economic transformation of the current Senegal.

“The political will of the people of Senegal is the key behind the political and economic achievement,” he said.

“Within the last 59 years, Senegal has achieved several economic, political and social progress. This transformation is the political commitment and will of the people of Senegal”.

Following its independence, Senegal has achieved economic progress with limited economic resource This is the political commitment of the government which is also witnessed here in Ethiopia.

 The recent reelection of Senegalese President, Macky Sall, is a sign that how the people of Senegal are committed to sustain economic progress.

Concerning to the current political transformation, the ambassador said Ethiopia as the capital of Africa is witnessing itself in various ways.

He said political empowerment of the youth and women is a good indication how the nation is committed itself to development and democracy.

“Senegal and Ethiopia has very long period of diplomatic relations. We believe that we can succeed to uphold African identity. We are two great African countries. And our leaders are very close. In this regard, the National Day is a signal to our future cooperation in various ways.”

What is more, in terms of bilateral cooperation an agreement establishing a joint commission was signed between Ethiopia and Senegal in 2006. This would give the relationship a new momentum for the benefits of the two countries.
