Faithful urged to consolidate peace, unity

 • Congregates mark 1443rd Eid al-Fitr

ADDIS ABABA –The Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council President Mufti Haji Umer Idris called on the Muslim community to strengthen efforts in supporting peace, unity and development of the country.

Meanwhile, the 1443rd Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, was celebrated colorfully yesterday across the country.

Addressing the morning Eid Prayer in Addis, Mufti Umer stated that unity, peace, tolerance, development, and growth have always been important for Ethiopia as no one can live without these virtues.

He also insisted that every group and/or individual, particularly the Muslim community, should play their role in the realization of peace, unity and development of the country.

He further condemned the displacement and killings of civilians because of their religion or identity and the destruction of property. These evil acts need to be stopped, as to him.

He said: “Killing each other, displacing and killing civilians, and damaging property are not the behavior of human being. We have to eliminate these bad acts and return to human behavior.”

On his part, Addis Ababa Islamic Affairs Higher Council President Sheikh Sultan Aman Eba stated that everyone must work together to ensure that Ethiopia remains a country where its people love each other, lives in peace, and stands together for their country.

“Religions do not require participations that cause division, hatred, damage, and conflict among society.” He also advised the religious teachers to examine their inner selves and stand for peace and unity, as unity benefits the country and its people.

As to him, everyone needs to stand up for peace, and disagreements need to be resolved through dialogue.

He further urged the government to bring the wrongdoers and ensure rule of law across the nation.

The 1443rd Eid al-Fitr was marked at Addis Ababa Stadium at national level with the presence of officials and members of federal and regional states’ Islamic Affairs Councils, higher government officials, representatives of other religious institutions, members of the diplomatic and diaspora communities, and representatives of Islamic Affairs Councils of Djibouti and South Sudan, and other invited guests.
