ADDIS ABABA- International community members and government officials stated that, environmental protection initiatives should be sustained as climate change across the globe is posing myriads of threats.

Speaking at an event to launch Stockholm+50 National Consultations of Ethiopia yesterday, Environmental Protection Authority Director General Getahun Garedew (PhD) said that, Ethiopia has adopted several initiatives for sound management of the environment including the Prime Minister’s initiative for green legacy.

The Stockholm Declaration and Action Plan for the Human Environment and several resolutions have also been taken into account, as to him.

As environmental protection in Ethiopia has link with economic development, the Ethiopian government is acting based on environmental issues.

Sweden Embassy in Ethiopia Minister Counselor and Deputy Head of Mission Roos Isaksson also said that, the consultation will be held in Stockholm, Sweden under the theme “Stockholm+50: a healthy planet – for the prosperity of all our responsibility, our opportunity.”

Consultation high-level meeting will be held to commemorate the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Environment and to celebrate 50 years of global environmental action, he noted.

The international community needs to recognize the importance of such consultations on environmental issues, he urged.

“We need to act based on multilateralism in tackling the Earth’s triple planetary crisis – climate, nature, and pollution,” he added.

The Stockholm +50 national consultations will be conducted in 58 countries between February and May 2022 with the financial support from the Government of Sweden and with facilitation of UNDP & UNEP.
