Safety the ‘be-all and end-all’ of the airliner: Ethiopian

ADDIS ABABA- Ethiopian Airlines said its meticulous aviation safety measures and world-class training for pilots and cabinet crew have enabled it to become the leading African carrier with best safety records.

Speaking to The Ethiopian Herald, Ethiopian Corporate Communications Manager, Asrat Begashaw stated that the airliner has been recognized for excellence in fulfilling the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) training and safety requirements.

The Airline’s leading and largest civil aviation academy in the continent motivated ICAO Secretary General, Dr. Fang Liu, to come to Ethiopia in her first visit to Africa at her capacity; where she said Ethiopian success in ensuring aviation safety is something other African airliners’ need to share.

Noting that aviation safety is a priority of the Ethiopian Airlines, Asrat indicated that the carrier goes a long way to modernize its service through massive investment in building Africa’s largest civil aviation academy and other facilities. “This huge investment to capacity building manifests Ethiopian government’s commitment to transform the aviation business.”

The center of excellence award given for Ethiopian Civil Aviation Academy coupled with the countless honors the airline received from continental and global entities are recognition for Ethiopia’s aviation safety level and the progress the civil aviation industry has registered over years, he elaborated.

ICAO recognized Ethiopian aviation academy as regional training center of excellence, and International Air Transport Association (IATA) authorized the academy as global training center and accredited training school.

According to the Manager, the academy trains aviation professionals from classrooms to simulator training and offers industry standard training for pilots, aircraft technicians, cabin attendants and ground service staff. The academy’s Leadership and Career Development Center also trains thousands in management and leadership skills.

Furthermore, the cabin crews’ training simulates real-tie scenarios with training aircrafts designed for emergency drills and service training. The pilot training school has light aircraft, motionless and moving simulators on both training and jet aircraft.

“The academy has trained the required aviation professionals both for Ethiopian Airlines Group and other partner airlines around the region,” Asrat said, adding that the facility has the capacity to support Ethiopian Vision 2025 growth plan with adequate aviation professionals.

Human resource development (HRD)is one of the four pillars of the Airliner Vision 2025 while the remaining are fleet, infrastructure and systems, it was learnt.
