Ministry presents nine-months report

ADDIS ABABA – Ministry of transport presented its nine month performance report yesterday to the House of People’s Representatives.

Presenting the report, Minister of Transport Dagmawit Moges said that the Ministry has been striving to achieve GTP II goals like fair distribution of transport services, infrastructure expansion and other similar activities by modernizing the sector.

The Minister also told the Parliament that her Ministry has been providing accessible, fair and effective transport service by converting 18 types of services from manual to electronic based.

As to her, the Ministry was able to carry out maintenance programs over 13,300 kms of road within the budget year.

Mentioning that the Ministry has undertaken supervision in 266 car training centers in six states, she said 253 of them demonstrated improvement.

It is working to sign interface with Federal Technical and Vocational Agency in relation to the provision of driving license so as to produce skillful and competent drivers, she added.

Pertaining to reducing traffic accident, the Ministry has been undertaking awareness creation by using influential and famous people.

She explained that as the Ministry operates with huge government resources, there is high probability to corruption and to that end, the Ministry is undertaking various works which enables it bring transparency, and increase the participation of relevant stakeholders into the work process.

Habtamu Tegegn, General Director of the Ethiopian Road Authority, for his part said that the road constructed by the Authority in this budget year has surpassed the performance of last year by 700 km.

He noted that though the Authority has carried out a lot of successful activities, due to issues related to compensation and other challenges, it has encountered problem in terms of completing projects within the planned frame of time.

Underscoring that currently 300 road projects are under construction, he urged the support of the relevant stakeholders to monitor the progresses of the projects.
