Cabinet reshuffle to invigorate ongoing change

On the morrow of conclusion of the ruling party EPRDF’s latest assembly, the federal government has reshuffle its cabinet bringing Gedu Andargachew and Lema Megarsa, former Chief Administrators of Amhara and Oromia states respectively to the positions of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Defense, respectively.

Passing through the test of the country’s most turbulent moment during the last three years, Gedu and Lema’s ascent to the two important ministerial positions in the federal government is seen both as an endeavor that can boost the ongoing efforts of transformation while giving a chance to young leadership to take positions in their respective regional states.

Oromia State has held a ceremony to bid farewell to its outgoing Chief Administrator Lemma Magarsa in Adama town Thursday. During the ceremony, PM Dr. Abiy said the power transfer that took place in Oromia state government is a reminiscent of power transfer in Gada system where the outgoing Abba Gada hands over power to the incoming through peaceful dialogue. This kind of power transition

 will be an example for the rest of the society.

“Lemma changes the political system of the country tremendously, build unity among Ethiopians. Now what we expect from Lemma is ensuring peace in Ethiopia, in the horn of Africa and in the whole Africa since he has an experience so far. I hope he will record a new era in security sector.”

Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen said on his part this is a historical time of transition to build a strong nation and to solve the problems the poor.

“Lemma Megersa has done his best

 during his stay as the president to Oromia. And also wish him a good work in his new position as the Minister of Defense,” he noted.

Shimeles Abdissa, who assumed vice presidency of Oromia State following Lemma’s ascent as minister said on the occasion “Our leaders have shown us the path. They served to satisfy the need and want of the people. They showed that the supreme power resides in the hands of the people they lead.”

 Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael on his part asserted that every leadership member should be committed for the ongoing change that is progressing despite the challenges.

He added, Lemma has performed great achievements in Oromia and expressed hope that he will do the same with more effort and responsibility at the federal level.

He also said that we are on the right time to strengthen the federal system in respecting citizen and ethnic rights to bring national unity. “It is also my expectation from you all to take your regional and federal responsibilities for a better and great Ethiopia,” he added.

Debretsion further disclosed Tigrai regional state and its peoples willingness to collaborate with the newly appointed Vice President of Oromia State and its people.
