UDHR promotes dignity,equality,freedom : House Speaker 

ADDIS ABABA- The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a milestone document that shaped world changes and herald peoples dignity, equality, freedom and liberty, said Tagesse Chafo, House Speaker of Peoples’ Representative, FDRE

He made the remark during the celebration of the 70th anniversary of UDHR that held at ECE hall yesterday.

“Ethiopia is leading member country in the adoption of UDHR.,” he said adding the nation is currently undertaking wide ranging reforms on human rights protection and promotion by amending laws and regulations that affect Human Right, such as declarations of Charities, Anti-terrorism and others too.

He also underlined that the reform of the law is not an end by itself and the government will continue the effort.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNOHCHR) East African Regional Directress Nwanne Vwede-Obahur, for her part mentioning the past human right crisis, the world had been witnessing human suffering. She , therefore ,said that UDHR has come to force to prevent similar disasters in the future.

She also noted that the current effort to ensure human right protection and promotion effort, beyond governments and organizations effort, it demands everybody to contribute its part.

Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator of the UN System in Ethiopia, Aeneas Chuma also said “This day is, the day that we honor, peoples that sacrifices fighting for human right, fighting discrimination based on color, gender, race and others.”

The event was organized jointly by The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNOHCHR) AND Ethiopian Human Rights Commission ( EHC).

Meanwhile,the Chairperson of Ethiopian Human Rights Council Ameha Mekonnen, in connection with the day, called on the government to continue taking legal measures against criminals who have engaged in inhuman acts against citizens and those who were deeply involved in the great craftiness in the past 27 years,

He also noted the ongoing reforms would be fruitful so long as it promotes the rule of law in the country and respects human rights unconditionally through cleaning up the past problems with the legal system.

As to him, the council strongly condemns the stumbling of the reform, making conflict among the peoples and disturbing the learning teaching process in higher education.

He urged the government, political parties, media organizations and civic societies to work together towards bringing sustainable peace in the country .
