Agency to commence research aimed at standardizing local foods, beverages

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopian homemade spices, foods and beverages have started to get wide international and local markets but there was no guideline to determine their standards.

 Recently the Ethiopia Standard Agency has announced that a research is underway in collaboration with Ethiopia public Health Institute on six products Areki and Tej (local alcoholic drinks); Shero and Berbere (Spicy ingredients for sauce) as well as Beso and Kolo (food items prepared from barley), Ethiopian Standard Agency communication Director, Yesma Jiru said.

The research whose estimated three million Birr cost is financed by The World Bank can help suppliers to prepare the good items and beverages meeting the standards, he added.

The research will be completed in a one year time, it was learnt. In related news, National Standard Council endorsed 168 national standards recently which included guideline for the use of national standards in public policy as well as standards that ensure the quality of construction and civil engineering activities.

The standards are aligned with the country’s development strategies, it was learnt.
