ADDIS ABABA – Following a 1-0 away win over Uganda the Ethiopian women’s football team, widely known as Lucy, advanced in to the next round with an aggregate 4-2 win on Sunday in the second leg of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic qualifiers.
In the first leg held in Addis Ababa Lucy had a 3-2 win. Now Lucy will face the Cameroon side. If they get victory over Cameroon they will get birth to the Olympics. This is a good opportunoty for the country’s women’s football revival. With this inspiration it is likely new clubs to be formed to enhance women’s participation in football.
The reult was indeed unexpected. Ugand had an advantage with a 3-2 defeat in the first leg. A simple win was enough for Uganda to go through but they were not able to make it. The national side succeeded to go through.
Asrat Megersa departs from Shire Sihul
ADDIS ABABA – The former Ethiopian national football mid-fielder Asrat Megersa left the Tigrayan Shire Sihul left the side by agreement, club sources announced. Asrat was one of the best players for the national team who qualified for the African Nations Cup finals after 31 years that was held in South Africa in 2013. Asrat was sidelined due to injury sustained for long. Asrat departed from the club with agreement. Dispute settlement in agreement has been rarely seen when players depart from a certain club. It is said that this is a good precedent for others to follow.
Gezahegn Ketema enjoys second win with Coffee
ADDIS ABABA – The newly appointed care taker Coffee Coach Gezahegn Ketema enjoyed his second 3-1 win over the lowly Dedebit side on Thursday at the Addis Ababa stadium. The losers Dedebit complained that heavy rains disturbed them in their play for survival. Dedebit were in a 1-0 lead before the heavy rain but right after the rain Coffee scored three goals to enjoy a 3-1 comfortable victory.
Ethiopian athletes win in Juba road race
ADDIS ABABA – The Ethiopian athletes both in men’s and women’s 10 kilo metres races secured victory on Sunday at the South Sudanese capital Juba. The former Ethiopian President Dr. Mulatu Teshome and the South Sudanese President Salva Keer were guest of honours in this race. Many Ethiopian and Eritrean citizens participated in the third Juba road race. The organizers disclosed that 20 thousand people participated in this race.
