PM Office says reform on security agencies successful

ADDIS ABABA- Efforts over the past year to reform the country’s security apparatus have proved successful, according to National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister. The Advisor TemesgenTiruneh stated effective reform works were carried out on National Defense Forces, Information Network Security Agency, National Intelligence and Security Service and the Federal Police.

Temesgen said that, the institutional reforms have focused on leadership, mindset, and work process and operational changes as well as ensuring enhanced alignment across the security apparatus both at Federal and Regional levels.

Previously the sector has had many problems related with administration and providing relevant and timely information for the society. Even though the sector is challenging compared to others it has displayed unique outcome. Press Secretary with Office of the Prime Minister Nigusu Tilahun said that, previously the grievances of the public were related to anti-democratic activities, lack of equal benefits, narrowness of the democratic landscape and problem in relation with government service.

He stated that, the government has done its best level regarding ensuring rule of law, justice and restoring peace in the country over the past year. In addition the security, Information Network Security Agency, National Intelligence and Security Service are the main areas that have shown improvement over the year.

He added that, to sustain the ongoing reform and make it durable it must be institutional. The society must work for unity and forgiveness to avoid ethnic strife and related problems which are causes for the displacement and conflict. He stated that, after Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed took office Ethiopia has passed a law that grants amnesty to political prisoners as a result of which over ten thousand prisoners were freed. The law is in line with a breathtaking series of political and economic reforms in Ethiopia, since Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed came to power in April, he elaborated.
