A year has elapsed since unprecedented achievements started erupting in Ethiopia. Today is the 365th day for Prime Minister Dr. Abiy at office with a great deal of achievements by any standard. The nation is celebrating the supreme achievements that have significant influences across the nation and beyond. The event marks the great achievements that Abiy’s leadership has accomplished.
Indeed, celebrating those supreme achievements reinforces the enthusiasm that will sustain the ongoing reform. The first achievement the nation experienced due to Abiy’s coming to power was unprecedented peace and stability across the nation. Many people believe that had it not been for Abiy’s coming to the power, the three –year massive popular violence against the government would have caused grave disintegration.
Right from his inaugural speech, the young leader started communicating the necessity of love, forgiveness and synergy and saved the nation from the verge of collapse. Among these, as soon as he came to power, he successfully established peace across the nation. In response to his inaugural speech painted with messages related to forgiveness and reconciliation, the entire citizens put trust in his leadership.
His immediate restoration of the broken public trust created amazement across the nation and beyond. Besides establishing peace across the nation and taking some swift actions, the diplomatic front to reinstitute the relationship between Ethiopia and Eritrea, which in turn brought about a new era for the much-troubled Horn of Africa, has been another great achievement. By reconciling the two nations, he overcome hostility, melted reluctant hearts, reduced indifferences and initiated lasting peace and stability.
Furthermore, mediating conflicts between Eritrea and Djibouti; between Kenya and Somalia, he launched a new hope of integrating the Horn of Africa. Considering the opposition parties as competing ones, he broadened the political space for any party including those who had been outside in armed struggles for quite long time.
As a result, a number of competing parties and activists came back home from different corners of the world for peaceful struggle. This is one of the greatest achievements a determined leadership like Abiy’s can demonstrate. Such incident is the first in the history of the nation. And his plan of initiating privatization of public enterprises is another success in the economic front. The efforts he made so far are quite remarkable.
The negotiations and diplomacy with competing political parties, Diasporas, neighboring countries such as Eritrea, Egypt and the like will have both economic and political importance. The determined and skillful leadership he showed in reforming institutions is another extraordinary achievement. Appointing some prominent opposition figures at government positions, revising laws that were impeding the democratic and human rights of citizens and the like are supremely great accomplishments of the leader in order to sustain the intended reform.
In short, the nation has been experiencing very significant achievements since April 2, 2018. In a year, Abiy has accomplished great deeds what his predecessors could not do in a couple of decades. The exceeding achievements the nation has registered, in a relatively short period of time, are the best indication that the leader can do great things when he is given adequate time. Thus, esteeming the success achieved so far, let’s give the leader adequate time so that we shall enjoy higher achievements in the days ahead.
