For most African countries, peaceful political transition is something difficult to imagine. For one or another reason, coup d’état and civil war are the most common means of attaining power as typical attributes of most African countries.

Ethiopia is not an exception. It is only almost a year when something unprecedented has happened to Ethiopia – peaceful political power transition. That is why it has caught the attention of the world. But more importantly, the coming of the young political leader, Dr. Abiy Ahmed as a Prime minister of the nation was hot agenda locally as well as globally, frequently making headlines in world mainstream media.

This was what the BBC International said on its September edition: “The pace of changes in Ethiopia has been so fast since Abiy Ahmed became prime minister in April that it is almost like observing a different country. The reforms he has introduced were unthinkable not so long ago.” With the coming of Dr. Abiy into power, love, forgiveness and synergy were the core messages that came in center stage.

Though the land has remained to be symbol of freedom for other African countries, domestic problems and revenge had crippled it to free itself from the shackles of poverty and backwardness. Since taking office almost a year ago, Prime Minister Abiy has taken several actions that would change the current situations of the country. His swift diplomatic measure in peace and reconciliation between Ethiopia and Eritrea has beamed new rays of hope even for the rest of the countries in the much-troubled Horn of Africa.

The diplomatic relationship of the two nations that was disrupted for two decades have of course has brought a new bright season for the people of Ethiopia and Eritrea. What is more, his decisiveness in opening the political arena to opposition parties has brought several opposition parties and activists into their mother land from different corners of the world. However, this does not mean that all groups were satisfied and all paths were smooth for Dr. Abiy and his administration over the year.

The assassination attempt on him made in June last year at Meskel Square was just a reminder that his reform measures were far from satisfying every Ethiopian. Now almost a year elapsed he came to power. With all difficulties; with all promise;with all success stories and diplomatic relations the young leader, Abiy Ahmed, will celebrate his one year ascension to Prime Ministerial office next Tuesday, megabit 24 (April 2). Hatred and revenge has cost the nation thousands of innocent lives.

It has incurred the nation billions of dollars in debt. Though the land is a symbol of freedom for African countries, domestic violence and revenge has crippled its efforts of democratization and economic transformation.

Cognizant to this fact, love, forgiveness and synergy have become the new mottoes of Ethiopia under its leadership of the reformist Abiy Ahmed. Indeed, the rewards of love, forgiveness and synergy are – as preached by Prime Minister Abiy – are peace, stability and prosperity.

Ethiopia is a great nation with an ancient history and civilization. Some Ethiopians feel that if the current history could not bring us changes and serve as a bridge to ideological differences, then it will become real curse, so some politicians say. As was mentioned by PM Abiy several times, when we pursue love and forgiveness there will be no any power that prevent the nation from repeating its ancient history of being great. Love and synergy are the only and the best ways that would benefit Ethiopia.

They are the only and the best ways towards building the great Ethiopia. Ethiopians were one and they would remain one. When they are together they become stronger. That was the secret behind Ethiopia’s 3,000 years of journey in history, as frequently heard from Ethiopian politicians and scholars.
