ADDIS ABABA – Since the coming of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) into office, peace has been exhibited across the Horn of Africa, local and international media report. Being determined for peace is the first priority of the Prime Minister in which he calls all governments and peoples of the region for unity and for Medemer (synergy), he also encourages neighboring countries’ government commitment in peace building and eagerness to come together.
The Ethio-Eritrean peace deal was among his outstanding peace building contributions, which he accomplished immediately after taking the oath of office. The Premier have undertaken successive bilateral discussions with neighboring and other countries beyond the region since coming to office.
Moreover, Prime Minister Abiy Amhed (PhD) also commonly highights the need for mutual economic cooperation and joint port development with neighboring countries along with promoting harmonious people-to-people proximity. Abiy’s effort in pacifying the East African region and aspiration in interconnecting the region highly rests on social, political, economical and infrastructural integration.
The following are the outstanding roles that he demonstrated within his 365 days on power in regards to regional pacification and integration.
– July 08, 2018 – PM Abiy arrived at Asmara for the first time in 20 years, and break the ‘no war no peace’ scenario between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
– July 09, 2018 – Ethiopia formally requested the UN Security Council to lift sanctions that it had imposed on Eritrea in 2009.
– November 14, 2018 – The U.N. Security Council lifted sanctions imposed on Eritrea nine years ago, rewarding its improved relations with Ethiopia. And it ended Eritrea’s decade of international isolation.
– June 20, 2018 – PM Abiy Ahmed hosted a private dinner to President Salva Kiir & Dr Rieck Machar together. The two met for the first time in two years and agreed to work for peace.
– September 07, 2018 – Eritrea and Djibouti agreed to normalize ties with the reconciliation efforts of Abiy.
– September 06, 2018 – Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia pact boost for regional peace, development and signed various tripartite agreements.
– March 05, 2019 – The Prime Minister broker peace between Kenya and Somalia, and helped to reach consensus on contribution towards the sustainable peace and integration of the region.
