ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopian Leather Industry Development Institute announced that it secures over 13 million USD from the export of leather and leather products in the month of November.
Institute Communication Director, Birahanu Sirjabo told Addis Zemen that 21 leather factories, 11 shoes factories, three glove factories and nine leather clothes and goods factors have secured 13, 123, 880 USD by exporting their products to various countries.
“The performance stands at 59 percent compared to their plans.” According to him, foreign companies take the lion share of the export as compared to domestic ones which is 86.4 percent and 13. 6 percent respectively. Huawajian International is a leading in pulling the greater slice of foreign earning, he said. “The performance has shown a-13 percent increment when compared to last year’s same period.”
To him, more collaboration and works needs to be done to attract both domestic and foreign investors to seize the sector’s rich potential. In addition, shortfalls in regard to diversifying markets and products have also been observed, he said.
“The Institute has strongly been working to boost the efficiency of the industries. One way among these is creating strong linkage with higher educational institutions to ensure the transfer of knowledge and cuttingedge technology which in turn can enhance quality of products.”
