ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) said the Genalle Dawa III hydropower plant is set to see completion and start operation in August depending on flows of water.
Recently, EEP has also announced that filling of the Dam’s reservoir has commenced which was delayed due to the time it takes for communities in the vicinity of the Dam to be relocated to another area. EEP also revealed to The Ethiopian Herald that the Dam has huge potential for fishery and tourism development.
EEP has incurred additional cost due to project delay and compensation payments. The Dam which is located in Oromia State is reported to hold 2.57 billion meter cube water and have a capacity to generate 1,600 GW.
The project which was started in 2011 is expected to cost 451 USD of which 60 percent is obtained from the Chinese Exim Bank while the remaining 40 percent is reported to be covered by own capacity. As documents obtained from the projects office, the Chinese CGGC is the one which is in charge of civil and electromechanical works whereas the US-based MWH take the consultancy.
