UN Secretary – General António Guterres announced the appointment of Foreign Minister Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu as Director General of the Office of the United Nations in Nairobi (UNON) on Friday.
The appointment of Dr. Workneh is ascribed to Ethiopia’s significant roles in the promotion of regional peace and security as well as the country’s efforts to realize the Sustainable Development Goals.
Dr. Workneh succeeds Hanna S. Tetteh of Ghana who was appointed as Special Representative to the African Union and Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union according to MoFA.
Congratulating on his appointment, the Prime Minister Office described Dr. Workneh as a person who has recently “played an important role in facilitating reforms in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and particularly in Ethiopia’s new trajectory of championing Horn region integration.”
