In many countries, Ethiopians represent a considerable sum of the diaspora community. Many have lived in various countries for many decades that they have accumulated a large sum of knowledge, experience as well as capital.
Many of them also have an interest to either return home permanently or temporarily, as well as contribute in various ways to the development of their country. But for many years many of them were not able to realize their dreams due to some obstacles.
Some of the obstacles were related to lack of justice which was the very reason that led them to exile. Besides, even if they want to return home despite the challenges, there was no institutional support for that purpose.
Recently the government has established a Diaspora agency to streamline the efforts of Ethiopians abroad in the overall local development activities.
Recently the State Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Ambassador Birtukan Ayano paid a working visit to the Ethiopian Diaspora Agency.
According to information obtained from the agency, during her visit, the Ambassador toured the various departments of the Agency and the activities carried out in each department and had discussions with experts in each department. At the end of her visit, she met with the management members of the agency and gave instructions.
In her message, she said that the bureau is organized in a way that is suitable for work and that it provides a lesson to those who want to create a customer-friendly office organization.
She said the agency has been able to mobilize large sums of money for various national projects and calls by promoting encouraging activities and increasing Diaspora participation.
She said the agency’s efforts are being taken seriously, adding that the government and the people should work hard to mobilize the Diaspora to stand guard for the national interest.
The Director-General of the Ethiopian Diaspora Agency, Selamawit Dawit, on her part thanked the Ambassador for her visit and encouragement, as well as for her work instructions.
Selamawi further indicated that the working follow-up of Ambassador Birtukan has enabled the agency to do a good job in gathering a good sum of resources for the completion of development projects as well as timely national issues.
