Ordinary Session of the IGAD Council of Ministers Commences in Djibouti

The 46th Ordinary Session of the IGAD Council of Ministers commenced in Djibouti today February 27/2119.

In his opening remarks, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chair of the IGAD Council of Ministers Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu  highlighted the agenda items of the Session, which he said, covered the reform of the structure and treaty of IGAD.

He said, “The first agenda of our gathering today is the Organizational Structure and Treaty of IGAD. We need to conclude this unfinished business in a manner that enables the Organization to speed up its economic integration. I cannot think of a better time than today to realize the restructuring of IGAD so that it can capitalize on the robust situation in our region to bring the most needed Peace, Stability and Prosperity”

The Minister added that the peace, security and development of this wider region would benefit from more cooperation, not competition. “The absence of an organized and inclusive regional mechanism for dialogue and cooperation around the Red Sea impedes progress on a wide range of issues, including economic integration and regional peace and security,” he added.

Dr. Workneh underlined that the future of the region lies in a commitment to stability and security for all people, as well as inclusive and sustainable growth and economic integration at regional level.
