Agency aims to heighten engagement with Diaspora

ADDIS ABABA– Ethiopian Diaspora Agency is to be officially launched this coming Friday, and it is expected to help heighten the engagement with the Diaspora community

Speaking to the Media yesterday, the Agency’s Director General Selamawit Dawit stated that the engagement with the Diaspora will be a two-way street, where both the country and the diaspora community mutually benefit.

The Agency has a working principle: ‘Me for Ethiopia; Ethiopia for me’, she added. The Diaspora can contribute to the development and prosperity of their homeland through knowledge and skills transfer, capacity building, promotion of trade and FDI, and entrepreneurship, she said before pointing out that the Diaspora is an asset with huge potential to contribute to Ethiopia’s reform agenda.

Moreover, the Director General indicated that an information system for Diaspora engagement where information on investment, business and trade is made available to the community so that they know what kind of opportunities and challenges lie ahead.

She also said that preparations are underway to setup a data center that identifies Ethiopian citizens living abroad. Selamawit also noted that the Agency is working to create enabling environment for the Diaspora to maximize knowledge and skills transfer.
