ADDIS ABABA-Ethiopian political parties discussed yesterday on issues that spearhead nation’s building. On the event papers on the role of Universities in creating critical students who truly concern for the mass and on political parties’ task, among others, were discussed. Presenting a paper, Professor Beyene Petros, said, University Students of Ethiopia had pioneered in embracing progressive ideas .
They were concerned about the demand of the mass. During those days students and workers union were encouraged to protect mass right unlike the incumbent. They were organized to protect the interest of the mass without buckling under the pressure by the ruling party as it is true of present day Ethiopia. Universities should produce critical and sagacious students that keep abreast with modern global situations.
University students of 1960s and 70s had demonstrated their progressiveness by fighting feudalism and imperialism. However, this generation seems segregated in enclaves of ethnicity instead safeguarding unity, the paper indicated. On the event, presenters mentioned off and on and group based political party system as chasms for democracy.
