Political reform: A spinal column of transformation

BY MENGESHA AMARE

The Prosperity Party (PP) and Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF), which deviated from the former for an obscured reason, have more consistently taken broadminded and conventional positions, respectively, on a wide range of prominent national political, economic and social issues, including the sovereignty of the country, human and democratic rights and military restructuring since the reform made in Ethiopia two plus years ago.

Over time, some members of the general public in Ethiopia noticed that their issue preferences were increasingly inconsistent with the policy of both parties. Slowly, some of the citizens adjusted their preferences to match their partisanship, while others did the opposite being short of a party that better matched their policy preferences.

As history put it, Ethiopia has been a nation even since the time when most of the world countries didn’t exist as countries with a well structured government. It has been endowed with a rich history, tangible and intangible heritages, citizens shaped with the sense of hospitality and civic mindedness, powerful and easily accessible human labor and other significant elements.

Besides, its people have been very gallant and have developed entrenched national affection in all aspects. These citizens of the country had conducted five national elections since the promulgation of the constitution in 1987 E.C. However, these elections were merely conducted superficially keeping the so called constitutional order as they were entirely under the control of Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF) driven anti-democratic governance under the guise of egalitarianism and impartiality.

After almost thirty years of rampant of divide and rule administration, Ethiopia and Ethiopians have, though accompanied by a range of ups and downs, started enjoying the fruits of freedom, democracy and equality.

The reform was not in a position to be accepted by some of the TPLF junta members as it has been advancing towards bridging the leeway that they have been looting the national properties and violating the rights of people who have swerved off their ideology.

The Ethiopian People Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) later renamed Prosperity Party (PP) incorporating all its members excluding TPLF as the latter was willing to accept the ideology of PP. The government allowed TPLF to continue administering the Tigraty region with its deviated approach respecting the rule of law and being abided by the declaration of the National Election Board of Ethiopia.

However, a members of the TPLF earlier planned to return to power they lost by forcefully attacking the Northern National Defense base, they have been preparing for war since they left the center, the national palace in Addis Ababa.

Despite their intensive preparation for warfare with the federal government instead of fostering a number of developmental activities in favor of the Tigray people, they have swallowed the morsel of bankruptcy and now being chased away by the mercilessly attacked national defense force.

Most of them were demolished, some had surrendered, some others disappeared and care being chased away and searched for in tattered and ruined rural huts.

Immediately after the effective completion of the law enforcement operation in the state PP executive conducted a two-day conference and wrapped up delineating a ten-point resolution with a view to pushing the nation steps forward keeping its peoples unity, fraternity and national pride.

The conference helped participants pinpointed what are the stumbling blocks that hinder Ethiopia from being a prosperous nation, what are the fundamental threats of the society whose roots should get dried, what are the pivotal activities that need to be given priorities to further buttress the successes registered so far across the nation, among others.

“Ethiopia is a great nation from which many countries have been drawn important lessons in all aspects. Since the country is endowed with countless untapped resources, tangible and intangible heritages as well as a powerful and diligent young posterity, it can bring about meaningful change and prosperity if properties are managed responsibly, citizens develop sense of belongingness and patriotism, and if all citizens are treated equally and served fairly,” Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed underscored.

The conference also highlighted the major concerns of the 6th national elections due to be held in late May and early June. Elaborating the issues in relation to the upcoming election, the Premier said that the government is committed more than ever before to make the national elections fair, free, democratic and reliable.

It was also cited that political parties need to frame a wider and inclusive ideology that can benefit the country as a whole instead of roaming in a tribal or district-oriented slender boulevard.

In the aftermath of the reorganization of EPRDF into PP excluding TPLF and including the marginalized Solali, Benishangul Gumuz, Afar and Gambella affiliate parties into the mainstream, PP has become a well consolidated, reliable and comprehensive national party.

The Dr. Abiy Ahmed led party and government is relentlessly working to help the country regain its reputation of being a sovereign nation in eastern Africa before its being downgraded following the self-centered and money-minded TPLF junta members, who have always been working to get Ethiopia collapsed.

However, as the saying goes, “Truth will triumph in the end,” their ill-intended mission of destabilizing the country at any cost working in collaboration with everybody who would not like Ethiopia’s success and progress has been prettily aborted and the prime actors are knocking death’s door.

It has been well attested so far that the diversity of hatred politics does not preclude Ethiopia from producing a systematic account of the process and nature of political development. Regarding themselves as the ultimate elements to make the Ethiopia sustainable, but the country will vanish unless they rule it taking their time-tested conspiracy and coldhearted treatment among the entire citizens of the country for granted, the unmet requirements and ambitions of all Ethiopians from corner to corner for over the last twenty eight years and pressures from below for, at the least, accountability, good government and political reform, pushed TPLF to a tapered corridor and they hid themselves at Mekele assuming that the public would stand by them. However, the entire society there acted otherwise and fostered their state of being dragged out and bulldozed.

If Ethiopia is to regain its ancient civilization and reputation, there will have to be a second and more radical wave of innovation; this time directed at the production stable, decentralized and democratic systems at national and regional levels.

Reformed institutions such as the Defense Forces, INSA, the National Election Board of Ethiopia and their dynamic as well as patriotic leaders, who have thoroughly overcome the complicated ups and downs, can provide the country with either guidance or initiative in the democratic process through which the country has now been channeling.

Citizens with patriotic stance who stringently condemn malpractice, negligence and irresponsible approaches were far more likely to come from within civil society earlier. Yes, they had already had experience of wagging tails for the rampant undemocratic system, actors, sophisticated bureaucratic red tape, thorny conspiracy and the far more difficult task of the reconstruction of civil and political life in the aftermath of the political reform.

The fashion has now changed following the emergence of visionary, diligent and true patriots. These are citizenry to drive the change and prosperity wheel of the country well. At present the country is trekking on a decisive and thematic step to be a prosperous nation laid at unwavering foundation by its real sons and daughters.
