Diaspora increase support to current homeland affairs

Ethiopians living in various parts of the world are boosting their contributions in different kinds to the efforts of the government and the people at home.

Accordingly, Ethiopians living in Belgium and United Arab Emirates have raised and pledged a total of more than 1.3 million Birr while those in Kenya and Malawi have actively participated in discussion held to aware them on current domestic affairs.

According to FBC, Ethiopians living in Belgium and Luxembourg donated over 800,000 Birr to support affected people during the recently carried out law enforcement operation in Ethiopia.

In a webinar discussion facilitated by the Ethiopian embassy in Brussels, Ethiopian Ambassador to the kingdom of Belgium and the EU institutions, Hirut Zemene briefed the participants on the current situations in the country.

She underlined that Ethiopians living abroad and those of Ethiopian descent need to support the government’s efforts in rehabilitating displaced people and those affected during the law enforcement operation in Tigray region.

Participants and representatives of Ethiopian community organizations in Belgium and Luxembourg, on their part, said that it is not only an Ethiopian duty but also an honor to be able to support those affected by the law enforcement operation in Ethiopia.

They expressed hope that the fundraising campaign would further be strengthened.

Finally, Ambassador Hirut commended the efforts of Ethiopians and people of Ethiopian descent in Belgium and Luxembourg for mobilizing financial and medical support giving priority to the wellbeing of their fellow Ethiopians at home, and understanding the urgency of the matter.

Meanwhile, ENA report indicates that Ethiopians residing in Dubai and North Emirates have pledged over half a million Birr humanitarian assistance to the needy.

A delegation led by Diaspora Agency Director-General, Selamawit Dawit held discussion with diaspora association leaders, scholars and prominent personalities. The director-general thanked the diaspora for their response to assistance.

On the occasion, a study on the main activities being carried out by the agency and the significance of organization of the diaspora as well current national issues was presented.

The need for unity of all Ethiopians and focuses on national unity rather than the division was underlined in the discussion.

Noting the importance of legality during migration and the respect for laws of the respective hosting countries, the participants have called for the implementation of procedures designed by the government.

The Diaspora community expressed their interest to provide continuous assistance for homeland in using experience and knowledge obtained from abroad.

Selamawit praised on her part the support of the diaspora communities in Dubai and North Emirates for safeguarding the national interest of Ethiopia.

The present support is the second to the previous assistance extended by the communities in Dubai and North Emirates, it was learned.

Similarly, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Demeke Mekonnen, has held discussion with Ethiopians living in Kenya and Malawi, according to FBC.

In the virtual meeting held yesterday, Demeke briefed them about the current situation in Ethiopia and government’s efforts to bring the criminal TPLF clique to justice.

He assured them that the government would further strengthen its rehabilitation efforts and on-going humanitarian assistance in the Tigray regional state.

Demeke called on them to assist the rehabilitation efforts and other activities to rebuild Tigray as well as provide support for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Ambassador of Ethiopia to Kenya, Meles Alem for his part thanked them for their support for the successful attainment of the law enforcement operation in Tigray.

Ambassador Meles said he is confident that the Diaspora will assist government’s efforts to bring perpetrators to justice, rehabilitate displaced people and rebuild damaged infrastructure.
