“I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce and agriculture in order to give their children a right to study painting poetry, music, architecture statuary, tapestry and porcelain.”
This was written by John Adams in the 1780s. The letter though was written several centuries ago, the message it conveys is still fresh and constructive- it clearly states the strong intergenerational linkages of societies; and the contribution of each generation in all streams of nation building.
In fact, in the middle of such well-established and orchestrated interactions, the existence of peaceful, stable and secure environment is decisive to proceed to desired level of development. Without the availability of peace and security, leave alone to do what we want or to live tranquilly, fulfilling basic needs and being in a survival situation is improbable. Peace and security counts a lot to promote individuals’ welfare.
This and other important matters make the selflessness services of the soldiers more incalculable that cannot be expressed in words as they sacrifice their blood and flesh in the face of chaos and insecurity.
The Defence Forces of Ethiopia are well known in this regard- defending their country all at once, lending hands to their own people.
The army apart from defending the country from inside and outside anti-peace elements in time of crisis, they are showing their courtesy and affability to the communities in various occasions. Members of the forces have been giving a lending hand to elderly and vulnerable group of the society in various parts of the country, including Tigray State.
Recently the army supported farmers residing in Holetta Town, Tulu Harbu Kebele, in collecting crops.
Speaking on the occasion, Colonel Abebe Waqshum, Commander-in-Chief of the Major General Mulugeta Buli Poly Technic College, said that the army, which comes out of the people and which has always been its symbol of pride, will continue strengthening its support to the peoples of war-torn areas and stand by their side in parallel with its major mission of protecting the safety and wellbeing of citizens and defending its country.
Holeta City Administration Employees and Development Works Coordinator, Fekadu Dejene, on his part said that the army’s participation in collecting harvest is commendable and has demonstrated its resolve to the cause of the people in practice
Appreciating the army and expressing their gratitude for supporting them in their field works, the farmers who received a lending hand from the defence forces said that if the standing crops had been left uncollected, they could have been destroyed by unseasonal rain.
They also said that the National Force is an emblem of their pride.
Tamrat Hosisa and Azanaw Tsegaye (Sergents) on their part said one of the hallmarks of the Defence Force is its. The forces by taking part in the farm work so speedily, they have shown their belongingness and concern to the farmers.
