The anniversary of Nations, Nationalities Day should be stimulated by the spirit of unity which is critical for national peace, tranquility and prosperity.
The Ethiopian Civil Service University(ECAU) students so remarked approached by this reporter.
Endshaw Gebere-Mariam is accounting and finance department student. He hails from Southern Nations, Nationalities People State. He remarked that the holiday must be celebrated in a manner of togetherness wedded with enthusiasm and national feeling, aligned with unified and dignified values.
Adding, he said, on such occasions citizens have to express readiness towards reinforcing a state of single mindedness through avoiding awkward and intolerable acts and hatred feelings. These help for realizing the nation’s vision, which is inevitable to bequeath virtues for the upcoming generation.
He noted that love-kindness, forgiveness and compassion acts are paramount to ward off inhuman treatments, political upheavals and social malaise. They are trajectories to engage the public for the common good, societal and national security.
“Celebrating the day has unshakable influence in cross-fertilizing ideas, promoting cultural values and transferring homogeneous knowledge to other parties,” Getachew added.
Gebremicheal Gudra is ECSU’s Urban Planning and Development student. He is from Benishangul Gumuz State. He said that “ Presumably, both urban and rural society are longing to celebrate the anniversary the coming weekend with a sense of respecting the right of nations and nationalities with a feeling of reciprocal and shoulder-to-shoulder togetherness.”
He noted citizens should celebrate the anniversary through introducing peculiar cultural values and social norms. He further noted the occasion should serve as a vehicle to further harness the ongoing reform and national development.
Governance and Development Department’s student Adnach Dagnew said that the event should be all inclusive with spotlight on the emerging ones. The occasion helps to preserve the ethnic groups’ cultural values. He added that it as well plays as a springboard to enhance people-to-people relations.
He pointed out that any citizen should be treated regardless of ethnic, race, gender backgrounds.
Optimistically, the gloomy faces of ethnocentrism, hatred feeling and rent-seeking mentality will not have room in the tunnel light of reformation and unification .
