Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt set direction on GERD technical report

ADDIS ABABA – Leaders of Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt reached consensus for the evaluation previous technical works on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) at ministerial level, foreign affairs ministers’ included, and deliberate on final report the ministerial group would come up with.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed received at his office delegations led by Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. At the heart of the discussions was also the water retention phase of GERD, Dr. Seleshi Bekele, Minister of Water, Irrigation and Electricity told journalists following the trio-talks.

“The discussion is part and parcel of the high-level meeting at the leaders’ level.” The leaders’ talks also cemented that Ethiopia’s rights of fast-paced development touching up on issues of posing non-significant harm to downstream countries as a result of GERD construction, the Minister hinted.

Based on the directions the leaders has set this morning, the ministerial level technical group will look into every matters and is expected to produce final report, he said, noting that the leaders will then make final decisions.
