It is appreciable by all standards to stand up for human rights. Apparently, for many years, Amnesty International (AI) has been at the forefront of the campaigns aimed at ending abuses of human rights across the world.
That is why a number of governments have been taking reports prepared by Al seriously and trying to bring human rights violators before justice or take timely corrective measures for the reported misdeeds.
But, AI‘s latest report on Ethiopia is unchecked and unbalanced as it has reported various unfound human rights violations by Ethiopian security forces ever since the reformists assumed power.
In its recent one- sided report , the organization has also mainly focused on accusing the forces that have been quelling the violence using all necessary legal measures than the perpetrators of the violence .
The organization has not uttered a single word about those irresponsible individuals who have been busy to stoke intercommunal and ethnic violence that have caused great human and material losses in the country. Therefore, AI needs to weigh the impartiality of its sources and it has to reconsider and revise its report for the sake of truth and justice.
At this particular time, when the whole world is intensifying the fight against COVID-19, the release of unchecked and unbalanced report is unhelpful in the global efforts of upholding basic human rights during disaster.
Hopefully, the organization would soon come up with balanced and checked report and thus, the government, pertinent bodies and general public would for sure take the report seriously and pay attention to each and every reported human rights violations in the country. This is because upholding human rights in a hostile climate or not is the top priority of a given government.
One must not forget here that no one is above the law, individuals, state actors and politicians, if they are proven guilty of human rights violations, they will be held accountable by law under any circumstances.
