Diasporas response on the Nile dam complaints

On account of the God-given water resources positioned countrywide, Ethiopia is considered as the water tower of Africa. Dejectedly, our country, Ethiopia failed to get itself involved in a wide spectrum of development activities making the most of its resources.

There are around ninety tributary rivers nationwide that wash off Ethiopia’s fertile soil time and time again. In the same way, aside from benefiting 84 million cubic meters of waters from Ethiopia, billon tones of fertile soil are washed away year on year.

When Ethiopia embarked on building the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam to pull its people out of the quagmire of poverty and thwarting dependency syndrome, Egypt embarked on coming up with a wide spectrum of underprovided reasons in connection with the dam.

Everyone is well aware of the fact that Egypt and Ethiopia have once again crossed sword for the reason that Ethiopia has put off its involvement in the US-arbitrated discussions over the filling and operation of the dam demanding more time on the draft agreement.

Following the draft agreement, Ethiopian Diasporas living in various parts of the world have been expressing their opposition now and again. Mulu Tesfaye is an Ethiopian Diaspora living in Canada, Toronto.

She said regarding the issue, “We should give emphasis to the construction of Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam giving the cold shoulder to Egypt’s propaganda. As long as Ethiopia originates 86% of the Nile River, as always, we should work hand-in-glove until the dam sees the light of day,”

“To the best of my knowledge, I have the nerve to say, Egypt will not go to war. They are making an effort to play mind games, scare us, and ask more than we would agree for less. We need to be very careful. We do not have to focus on the war news. It will not happen anytime. In fact, they leave no stone unturned to destabilize and weaken Ethiopia making use of opposition parties,” she added.

The other Ethiopian diaspora whom The Ethiopian Herald approached goes by the name of Anteneh Melaku. He lives in Calgary, Canada. He said regarding the issue, “Egyptians are endeavoring to preserve their old positions by creating alliances with Sudan and Arabs targeting at destabilizing Ethiopia and distracting our natural right of constructing dams on the Nile River and its tributaries,”

He kept on saying, “Ethiopians regardless of sexual category, ethnicity, religious affiliation, political stance, and other related aspects should keep on constructing the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. In doing so, we can take the country to the next level of success and change the lives of millions of Ethiopians after a short time.”
