Ethiopian Diaspora keeps support to fight against COVID-19

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopian Diaspora communities are participating in various forms to help nation mitigate the impact of COVID-19 global pandemic without causing further damage.

In an exclusive interview with The Ethiopian Herald, Selamawit Dawit, General Manager of the Ethiopian Diaspora Agency said that the Diaspora Community has so far committed over 100 million birr, including in kind donations

Further, health professionals from South America and other countries conduct a weekly experience sharing virtual meetings with Ethiopia’s medical team, led by Dr. Lia Tadesse, Minister of Health.

Noting that the community has contributed necessary medical equipments like facemasks, gloves, medical kits, sanitizer and various hygiene materials, she added that the support has been accumulated from 60 countries such as China, USA, Canada, Frankfurt, Australia, UAE, South Africa, and Djibouti, among others.

The mobilization is done by consular missionaries residing in different countries. Organizing ‘mitigation taskforce’ in each state, the missionaries are mobilizing and addressing essential information for the Ethiopians, according to her.

She also noted that the financial and in-kind supports worth over 100 million Birr are collected till April 24.

Appreciating the Diaspora community’s endless support towards mitigating the impact of coronavirus, the General Director urged everyone living abroad to continue support and look out for citizens nearby.
