Political Parties deliberate on governing proposal

ADDIS ABABA– Political parties have deliberated yesterday on the proposed code of conduct initiated by the Ethiopian Electoral Board to govern the interaction and coordination of political parties.

The proposal contractual treaty among the parties presented by the Joint Council of the political parties has three chapters and 20 articles. During the deliberation, Ethiopian Electoral Board Chairperson Birtukan Mideksa said the proposal is inclusive as it incorporated the ideas raised by parties.

The document will be used as input to building a strong democratic culture in the country. She also stated that her Office is set to adhere to the principles of justice. The proposal also requires the parties to respect the Constitution and to resist unconstitutional activities.

The monopoly of coercive power is given only to the government and other parties have to abide by this rule as indicated in the constitution, it was indicated. Party members and supporters alike are not allowed to perform any kind of law enforcement activities.

Political parties have the same freedom of movement in any part of the country, says the document. Pertaining to media and social networking sites, all political parties must also refrain from any activities that threaten the freedom of the media. During the discussion, a total of 103 political parties were present.
