TVETs raising innovation to combat COVID-19

ADDIS ABABA – Federal Technical and Vocational Education and Training Agency says it has raised its involvement in the prevention and control of the COVID-19 through innovating vital technologies.

Through the virtual conference on which the Agency’s Director made with regional stake holders, it was stated that different polytechnic colleges are producing innovative technologies to the community.

In a press release sent to The Ethiopian Herald, the agency is working extensively in order to reduce the harm of Corona virus against the community.

Agency Director Getachew Negash on the conference stated that various colleges have manufactured different pedals and hand washing machines with sensor technologies, face masks, gloves and medical uniforms. And they have also transferred the materials for consumers and enterprises, he added.

He additionally affirmed that all stakeholders in higher institutions can exploit more as they have high potential and tendency in order to solve any of societal problems. This time particularly needs youths potential to innovate more, he noted.

 Nigatu Dagnachew, Addis Ababa TVET office head on his part stated that his office is contributing its effort in preventing and controlling societal harm of the disease. Apart from manufacturing different face masks and hand washing materials, city’s TVET colleges have produced and distributed about 1,000 beds for different health centers, he noted.

Moreover, colleges are also involving in repairing medical instruments coupled with producing mechanical ventilators that are highly important for COVID-19 patients. Furthermore different regional TVET heads have also appreciated the college’s activities in preventing and controlling mechanism of this pandemic.

Diresse Eshetu, Vice Head at Amhara Regional States Technical and Vocational Enterprise Office on his part asserted that from 113 institutions in the state, 94 of them are directly participating in preventing and controlling activity of the virus.

Accordingly he said that the institutions have provided about 150 sensor hand washing pedals, 20 thousand face masks and 245 beds for quarantine centers. On the other hand Ebba Gerba, Head of Oromia TVET office said that apart from the above materials, Kenenisa and Nekemt health Colleges are producing WHO-standard sanitizers in order to combat the harm of the disease. He further avowed that Asela and Grawa colleges are ready to produce alcohol.

Tigrai states TVET office head, Mulu Geta (Ph.D) on his part said that the sector has already set three months plan to give response for the problem. Accordingly, apart from producing hand washing materials, they have also developed 11 new websites.

SNNPRs Education and Training Office Head Aklilu Lemma, different poly technic College like Dayo and others are warmly working in innovating significant materials in order to prevent and control the virus. Subsequently, coupled with producing different materials, the TVETs trainers, trainees and administrative staffs are participating in different volunteer activities across the state.

According to the release, other TVETs across the country are also actively contributing their part in order to combat this virus. Getachew further pledges the institutions for further activities after acknowledging them for their immediate response so far. He finally remarked that such activities will never end up until the country control the virus.
