ADDIS ABABA-Ethiopia has been underutilizing its water resources and potential for various development activities so disclosed Basins Development Authority.
Getitnet Getu, Communication Affairs Director at Basins Development Authority told The Ethiopian Herald that Ethiopia has 122 billion meters of cubic surface water and one to ten trillion meter cube of groundwater storage. Yet the country has only utilized 34-meter cube from both surface and groundwater.
He also added that the country discharges 36 to 40 billion meter cube of water annually, of this only 10 percent is in use.
People in the rural area access 80 per cent of the water supply from underground water.
As to him, the country’s water utilization performance stood at only 43 percent.
The Authority has been implementing Eco-hydrology Science and Buffer Zone framework to protect water bodies from damage.
The authority has also been undertaking Impact Assessment to identify the number of water bodies saved and protected from damage due to the activities done by concerned bodies he said. In addition, it will also help to.
