It is high time to governments and the international community to reaffirm commitments to offer care and support to migrant works as they are more vulnerable to the impacts of the global pandemic, COVID-19.
As part and parcel of the global community, Ethiopia has been playing its part to halt the spread of the virus. Despite the fact that the nation has lots of assignments at home, it was willing and happy to take all the risk to save its brothers and sisters in Africa. This compassion is not only limited at distributing personal protection equipment to African countries. It is also showing tis commitment through care and support to foreign nationals found in the country.
A good example to this is Syrian and other Middle East migrants who are found in Ethiopia. No matter how the virus is spreading rapidly, Ethiopia did not make a distinction between its citizens and migrants; it did not push them to leave the nation with the pretext of “Halting the spread of the virus”. These migrants are still receiving a warm treatment from their Ethiopian brothers and sisters.
This is what exactly each and every country of our plant should emulate. The question now is not whether a migrant is legal or illegal, whether s/he is white or black. The evil, coronavirus, attacks all humanity. Hence, it is a time to all of us and countries to save lives. So long us, the migrant workers are abided by the law of the respective lands they live, and adhere to the COVID-19 prevention efforts of the countries, they should get equal treatments.
However, some countries are displaying their evil faces. This is especially true for those nations whose recent action is totally immoral and inhuman. As a pretext of controlling the spread of the virus, they are forcibly repatriating migrants to their homeland which is immoral. The virus would end soon as worst plagues phased out in the past. Hence, care should be taken not to leave lasting scar between and among the relations of countries and peoples.
