The reaffirmation of unity which Ethiopians both at home and abroad have expressed over The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is a clear signal as the people’s age-old values are intact.
Nobody can twist the arms of Ethiopians to impose own will on a country which is the hallmark of sovereignty and freedom, said Yacob Arsano professor of political science and international relations at Addis Ababa University.
“There is no gainsaying the fact that Ethiopians are known for their patriotism, fighting for their freedom, defending their sovereignty and what have you. More to the point, as the past record indicates they do not give the green light to third parties to interfere in their affairs at any cost,” he added.
Commenting on the U.S. recent statement on GERD filling and operation, Yakob said the U.S. should respect the sovereignty and independence of Ethiopia. “The U.S. America does not have to turn a deaf ear to the naked truth with respect to the GERD,” he said.
As America attaches importance to its economic benefits and freedom, it should not be able to miss the fact that Ethiopia
is a highly respected country and loves its freedom and sovereignty more than anything under the sun, he added.
He continued, “Nowadays, the general public should place emphasis on maintaining unity and keeping the country’s interest and honor ahead of own interests.”
The government of Ethiopia has taken the right measure regarding the “statement” of the United States Department of the Treasury on the filling and operation of the GERD.
“As a matter of fact, the stance of America has been condemned by Ethiopians at home and abroad, Americans, renowned personalities, politicians, seasoned U.S citizens and all that jazz,”
