• Talks should reverse status quo
“As an ardent proponent of the notion of ‘African solutions to African problems’, the African Union does not have to give room for third parties to interfere on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) given that Africans can get to the bottom of their problem on their own.”
African affairs analyst Dr. Moha F. Jire criticized the African Union for allowing what she described as a “humiliation in the history of AU’s existence”.
“Taking an African issue to the White House was a joke to me.”
The AU does not have to abandon its duty. Furthermore, it is not logical to witness the White House leading African issues in the U.S.
Moha, who is a continental expert on peace, security, diplomacy and political issues said, “I am a strong believer of continental economic, social and cultural integration as well as mutual respect.”
She stressed that whenever Africans sit around a table in a meeting to deliberate on the issue of the GERD, they have to take into account the lopsided status quo – the fact that Ethiopia uses less than one percent of the 86 percent of the waters originate in its territories.
She further stressed that none of the Nile’s hydrological catchment lies in the interior of Egypt and contributes nothing to the flow of the Nile. But to the surprise of everyone, the country consumes most of the river’s annual discharge as it pleases.
She wrapped up saying: “Though Ethiopia referred to as a water tower of Africa, millions of Ethiopians have no access to electricity and other related aspects. Therefore, the country has the rights to make use of the Nile River to make the dream of its people a reality.”
