ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopian and foreign panelists have shown support for the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and Ethiopia’s right to utilize its resources for development.
The Ethiopian Press Agency in collaboration with the Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy and the Office of
National Council for the Coordination of Public Participation for GERD has organized a panel discussion yesterday where political analysis and panelists from Sudan, Al Jazeera Media, House of People Representatives, and others took part.
The panelists urged the Ethiopian government to give more attention to Arabic language media outlets in the country as Egypt has continued to deceive the Arabic speaking world by misinforming about GERD’s construction and facts.
Nesru Abajebel, member of the Ethiopian House of Representative and chair of the panel discussion said that since Ethiopia has geographical and cultural proximity to the Arab world, it has to utilize Arabic to address its development partners in the region.
Hali Yahya, a Sudanese political analyst, and media contributor. on his part
said Ethiopia must have involved the Sudanese media over the issue of the GERD from the start.
“Ethiopia cannot communicate its stance to the Arab World unless it uses the Arabic language,” he added.
He stressed that the GERD project will benefit Sudan in the prevention of flooding called on the three countries (Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt) to commit to the principle of shared benefit.
