PM, EU High Representative hold talks on COVID-19 challenges

ADDIS ABABA – Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed held phone talks with Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of EU Commission.

The Prime Minister said on Twitter that they discussed on challenges faced due to coronavirus (COVID-19).

The High Representative for his part said “EU is preparing a significant support package for Africa. Priority is to sustain health systems, national budgets and regional coordination.”

Meanwhile, the Premier has conducted a virtual call with the sub-committee heads of the high level National COVID-19 Ministerial Committee to assess activity performance and to determine if additional assignments are required, Office of the Prime Minister reported.

COVID-19 prevention and containment efforts have progressed with incremental actions through each of the sub-committees.

However, based on city wide observation missions undertaken by members of the committee, social distancing within market areas and transport systems as well as continued religious gatherings still remain a containment challenge, it said.

While attempts to raise awareness will continue together with law enforcement measures, members of the public are asked to strictly adhere to all cautionary advises in relation to the virus.
