WOLKITE – Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sport urged women to exert more efforts for country’s overall development.
Opening the 44th International Women’s Day on Sunday, Minister Dr. Hirut Kassaw called on women to work on ensuring peace, security and freedom as Ethiopian foremothers have been passing down such values to the posterity for long.
For years, women had been struggling for freedom and they also achieved more success in fighting against cultural domination and power, she said. In this regard, Kake Wurdwet, QueenEleni, Taytu, Mintwab and others had played a leading role in moving the nation to freedom and hegemony, she mentioned.
She noted that women were also charismatic leaders in many spheres in the struggle to establish and rule the country by providing disciplined and committed citizen. Therefore, they ought to work and achieve security, peace and development to their nation, according to Dr. Hirut.
Currently, the ministry is documenting the history of influential women who have played significant role to ensure freedom, development and fascinating leadership, she noted. “This will help to acknowledge the successful women and promote their deeds to encourage the generation and nurture more influential women.”
She also called on women to play due role in transforming the nation to peace and development. SNNPs State Culture, Tourism and Sport Bureau Head, Sintayehu Woldemichael for his part noted that all stakeholders ought to collaborate to enable women to access education, bring economic benefit, and avoid harmful traditions.
Organized by Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sport in cooperation with Ethiopian Businesswomen Association and Gurage Zone Culture Tourism and Sport Bureau, the 44th International Women’s Day was celebrated in Wolkite town at national level under a theme: “Respecting security and rights of women is the base to country’s peace and existence.”
